What is a Connector

A connector plugs into a port or interface to connect one device to another. Most connectors are either male (containing one or more exposed pins) or female (containing holes in which the male connector can be inserted). However for some applications, hermaphroditic connectors are required.

Connectors mostly transmit electricity, but they can also transmit light (via fiber optic), fluids (water, fuel, oil, food products) or gas. A same connector can be hybrid and mix these different types of contacts.

The challenge when connecting a device is to ensure that its performance is not disrupted by the transmission process. This can be critical when, for instance, patients’ lives depend on the reliability of medical equipment.
