Blind-mating connectors: the benefits

May 13, 2020 · 3 min read

Can you easily mate your connector even if you can’t see it? Don’t let lack of visibility slow you down. Fischer Connectors’ push-pull locking system is designed to reduce the time it takes to mate and unmate your devices.

All our connectors can be blind mated – Fischer Core, Fischer UltiMate™, Fischer MiniMax™, Fischer FiberOptic, Fischer Freedom™ –, so mating is never a problem even when you can’t see what you’re doing.

Being able to make those connections when you don’t have a clear line of sight makes your devices easier to use, reducing time, stress and frustration for the user.

With a choice of up to 4 key codes you have the option of being able to have multiple connectors on the same device and still being able to mate them correctly whether you can see them or not. And we are making connectivity easier with our new Fischer Freedom™ connectors, which have no key code!

The following two connector series offer maximum usability. Since they feature quick blind mating and are easy to handle (even with gloves), they allow quick set up and easy configuration for multiple missions with military/aerospace, medical, industrial, drone, transportation applications and wearables, amongst others.

UltiMate Series circular connectors from Fischer Connectors

The durable Fischer UltiMate™ Series is best for tough applications when Size, Weight and Power (SWaP) matter. Rugged, compact and lightweight, it withstands severe environmental, industrial and chemical conditions.

  • Extremely robust mechanical keying: push-pull locking or emergency release, keying with 4 different key codes, blind mating, anti-reflective and conductive body coating in grey anthracite
  • 10,000 mating cycles
  • IP68/69 sealing even unmated (20m/24h application dependent with more operating depth on custom request)
  • 360° EMC shielding with a grounding contact ring
  • Exceptional shock, vibration and corrosion resistance
  • Operating temperature from -55°C to 135°C
  • Designed to be highly configurable with a choice of crimp, solder or PCB contacts, plus bend relief and color overmolding
  • Power connector: 2x contacts 30 Amps each – 3x contacts 16 Amps each + 3x signal contacts

The low-profile, rugged and versatile Fischer LP360™ connector, the first product in the plug & use Fischer Freedom™ Series, has seven or four signal and power contacts and is available in metal and plastic.

Blind mating is made possible thanks to the connector’s innovative non-magnetic quick-release locking mechanism with pre-defined force, as well as to its contact configuration & design. The connector has no key code, which allows for 360-degree mating freedom and makes “mismating” impossible.

There’s no need to “align” its power and signal contacts, as the plug’s pins automatically find the corresponding concentric tracks of the receptacle.

  • Easy and quick to mate and unmate thanks to a unique combination of sealed, blind-mate and non-magnetic quick-release locking mechanism with pre-defined force
  • No key code allowing for 360° mating freedom
  • Low-profile and compact for easy and seamless integration
  • IP68 to 20m/24h (metal connector) / IP67 sealed mated and unmated (plastic connector)
  • 10,000 mating cycles, 5,000 rotations (metal) / 5,000 mating cycles, 2,500 rotations (plastic)
  • 7 or 4 signal & power contacts up to 24AWG compatible with USB 2.0 and Ethernet data protocols
  • Resistant to shock, vibration, torque and extreme temperatures
  • EMI proof (metal)
  • Operating temperature range (connectors only): -55 °C to +135 °C (metal) / -40 °C to +85 °C (plastic)
